  6. System Requirements
  7. -------------------
  8.  
  9. The Inkutils run on any PC with DOS 3.30 (or later) or Windows 95, and 256K
  10. of available DOS memory. Approximately 370K of free disk space is required
  11. for installation.
  12.  
  13. Installation
  14. ------------
  15.  
  16. To install the Inkutils, type d:INSTALL where d: is the drive (and, if
  17. appropriate, the directory) with the install program, then follow the on-
  18. screen prompts. After a successful installation, you will need to add the
  19. Inkutils directory to your PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
  20.  
  21. Once the Inkutils are installed, type INKUTILS to view the user guide at
  22. any time. All of the Inkutils support the /? and /HELP command line switches
  23. to display help on the Inkutil that has been run.
  24.  
  25. The file WHATSNEW.TXT describes the new features in this version. A full
  26. revision history is included in the Inkutils user guide.

  28. Description of the Inkutils
  29. ---------------------------

  31. The Inkutils are a suite of 11 DOS/Win95 DOS utilities:
  32.  
  33.     * DD - Delete Directory
  34.  
  35.       Allows a directory (and its contents) to be deleted. Much more
  36.       friendly than DELTREE. DD displays directory summaries before
  37.       deleting. Allows directories to be 'protected' which marks them
  38.       as read-only and prevents DD from being able to delete them
  39.       until they are 'unprotected'. DD supports Windows 95 long file
  40.       names.

  42.     * DEDIT - Description Editor
  43.  
  44.       A full-screen 4DOS/NDOS/TakeCommand file description editor with
  45.       mouse support and many unique features. DEDIT automatically scans
  46.       your 4DOS/NDOS.INI file for ColorDir and other settings, so that
  47.       it uses the same configuration you're already using. DEDIT can
  48.       also import file lists into the file descriptions. It also allows
  49.       short (8.3) filenames to be described with their Win95 long
  50.       filename equivalents, so even if you're under plain DOS, you can
  51.       still see the long filenames. DEDIT can now also perform
  52.       importing and grabbing functions automatically from a batch file.
  53.  
  54.     * CC - Cache Control
  55.  
  56.       A control panel for the SmartDrv (or any compatible) disk cache.
  57.       You can change cache settings by intuitive point and clicking
  58.       rather than using the less friendly command line options. CC is
  59.       also DoubleSpace and DriveSpace aware.
  60.  
  61.     * EE - Evaluate Expression
  62.  
  63.       A flexible calculator than can be used three ways: Command line
  64.       calculator, Desktop calculator or TSR popup calculator. The TSR
  65.       calculator can be loaded in as little as 1.5K of DOS memory. EE
  66.       can perform such functions as grabbing numbers from the screen,
  67.       putting numbers back in to a document (by sending them back
  68.       through the keyboard!), and much more.

  70.     * CE - Critical Error
  71.  
  72.       Replaces the standard "Retry, Ignore, Fail or Abort" message
  73.       with a popup window that gives much more information on the error
  74.       that has occurred. Can be loaded in as little as 900 bytes of
  75.       DOS memory, and, as with all the Inkutils, CE is fully compatible
  76.       with 4DOS and NDOS. CE also works in a DOS shell under Windows 3.x
  77.       or Windows 95.

  79.     * TM - Text Mode
  80.  
  81.       Allows various text modes (including any VESA text mode that
  82.       your video card supports) to be selected. With TM you can select
  83.       the largest text mode available on your machine automatically, list
  84.       available VESA text modes and select keyboard key repeat rates.
  85.       It's ideal for use in your AUTOEXEC.BAT.

  87.     * LE - List Executables
  88.  
  89.       Displays only the executable files (EXE, COM, BAT and, if you're
  90.       using 4DOS or NDOS, BTM) in the current or specified directory.
  91.       No more searching through long directory listings to find the
  92.       program to run! LE supports Windows 95 long filenames.
  93.  
  94.     * MCD - Make and Change Directory
  95.  
  96.       Performs the DOS commands MD and CD in one go. MCD can also
  97.       create multiple directories in one go (e.g. MCD \one\two\three will
  98.       create the directories \ONE, \one\TWO and \one\two\THREE ). It
  99.       can also protect directories, so that Delete Directory cannot
  100.       delete them. MCD supports Windows 95 long filenames.
  101.  
  102.     * FM - Fast Mouse
  103.  
  104.       Reduces the time taken for a program to reset the mouse. FM
  105.       can reduce the time taken for some programs to start up by
  106.       converting all slow hardware mouse resets to quick software
  107.       resets. Try it with the DOS editor, EDIT. 4DOS users will find
  108.       that it dramatically speeds up its on-line help.
  109.  
  110.     * DZ - Divide by Zero
  111.  
  112.       Intercepts any "Divide overflow" errors. If you are having such
  113.       problems, then DZ will display the name of the program that has
  114.       created the error and allows you to continue the program, rather
  115.       than automatically terminating it (which is the default behaviour
  116.       of DOS).

  118.     * IP - Inkutils Present
  119.       Provides a quick and easy way to see at once which TSR programs
  120.       from the Inkutils are currently resident in memory.

  124.       A friendly, menu driven user guide covering each Inkutil with
  125.       full instructions and examples.

  128. Shareware
  129. ---------

  131. The Inkutils are shareware, but are not limited or crippled in any way,
  132. so that a full evaluation may be made of them. Please support the shareware
  133. concept and register if you continue to use them.
  134.  
  135. When you register the Inkutils, you will recieve a disk of the latest
  136. registered version (which has no reminder screens), plus you will be notified
  137. about any updates or new versions in the future. Registering also encourages
  138. the author to continue to update this program and develop new ones.

  141. in the Inkutils user guide, so there's no excuse! (Type INKUTILS at the
  142. command prompt to view the user guide).

  167. disks can be sent instead, on request, but please indicate the disk
  168. capacity.

  170. You may freely distribute the shareware version of Inkutils as long
  171. as the files are not modified in any way. Please distribute the INSTALL
  172. package, rather than the individual Inkutils files.
